Built by New Paris, IN-based Smokercraft Boats, Sunchaser offers a line of pontoons for recreational boaters ranging from 14 to 24 feet. Its family of toons consists of three lines, the Cruise, Fish and Four Point series, each offering ideal features for cruising, water activities, even fishing. We recently tested the new 8522 Cruise at the annual Suzuki Canada dealer meeting on Lake Rosseau, ON, in September, 2008.
The 8522 is comprised of 25-inch diameter tubes with an all-aluminium transom and 3/4-inch plywood deck all backed with a lifetime warranty. Further integrity of this Sunchaser is provided by a five-year warranty on the 22-ounce carpeting on the deck. Other physical features include 1-1/4 inch anodized railings featuring polished castings and rounded fronts, which further complement the 8522s overall fit and finish. The deck cleats are all thru-bolted and both seating arrangements are backed with solid roto-cast bases.
Theres plenty of room onboard to entertain a good-size crowd. In fact, its rated to carry 14 people. Boarding is versatile thanks to the two 30-inch gates, one at the bow and one to port amidships. Both gates feature Posi-Lock latches ensuring they stay securely closed while underway or at anchor. Theres also a smaller gate aft, which offers access to the boarding ladder.
Up front are two large wrap-around lounges located to port and starboard. Additional seating is featured aft with an L-shape lounge. To enhance entertaining, both seating arrangements can be accommodated with the standard removable cockpit table featuring cupholders.
To port, by the boarding gate, is a unique feature family boaters will appreciate. A hinged section of the aft lounge can be opened to reveal a very functional changing curtain thats large and tall enough for adults. When not in use, the curtain and frame can easily be collapsed and stowed away. Another handy feature is the eight-foot, six-inch Bimini top that shades a good portion of the cockpit.
The helm is comfortable with its single sliding /swivel seat with a set of armrests. Set in the custom-moulded console, a sporty series of gauges adorn the dash and youll also find a flush-mounted stereo and recessed beverage holder. Below the console is a storage compartment to stow larger items such as a cooler or other cumbersome gear. Sunchaser also offers a new optional galley. Designed to further enhance entertaining and on-water convenience, the fibreglass galley comes complete with a cutting board, along with a fresh water holding tank with a hand-pump system as well ample storage space for a cooler or the optional 12V fridge.
Our 2009 model year test boat was powered by Suzukis popular DF140 Four-Stroke due to its capability of delivering solid hole shots, acceleration and top end power. In fact, some of the key features that attribute to its performance include forged one-piece crankshafts, 4-into-2-into-1 exhaust system, Electronic Fuel Injection, and solid state electronic ignition system. Similar to other Suzuki engines in this power range, the 140 is outfitted with a self-adjusting oil-bathed timing chain and 40-amp alternator.
Water conditions on Lake Rosseau were rather choppy during our test runs, however it did offer adequate conditions to put the 8522 through its paces. Acceleration was very solid and the 8522 was up on plane quickly in 2.3 seconds. We cruised comfortably at 17.9 mph at 4,000 rpm and the chop was handled with relative ease with little or no pounding. Pushing the throttle to 5,000 rpm, the 8522 cruised at 24.6 mph and at wide open throttle we hit a top speed of 31.2 mph. Handling was comfortable at a variety of speeds and a predictable outward lean occurred in the turns, which is to be expected with this type of hull design. Acceleration through the power curve was very solid and to attain top speed from idle took a very respectable 11.5 seconds.
If you enjoy the prospect of cruising the lakes and rivers with friends and family, the Sunchaser 8522 is a great platform loaded with value at a reasonable price. Combined with its fit and finish throughout, along with an ideal engine package such as the Suzuki DF140, youll be able to keep your crew happy while cruising along at a comfortable, fun-paced speed.
